Chirpy Dirges

Imperturbable

When you took me by the hand,
a force-field patted me on the back.
At night I slept like a squirrel
behind the bark.

No divine right to your love,
yet it made me King of the World.
Only person I met made me forget
other people are hell.

I was imperturbable
when you were my girl.
I was imperturbable
when you were my girl, girl!

Now my rock is gone,
the disinfectant sun
sees my true form - I am a germ
the beautiful morning burns.

Above my palms tallies purple
where I couldn’t cut loose these mortal coils.
The painkillerzilla is ending it all:
if I was dead, I’d be invulnerable.

King in his castle.
Boy in the bubble.
Immunity from prosecution.
Superman’s skin
and Batman’s suntan lotion.
I was indestructible
like a rat in the rubble.
I was always rescuable
when you were my Squirrel Girl.
You’re not the wind beneath them,
you’re the wings.
Like Batfink’s wings,
a shield of steel!
Like Batfink’s wings,
a shield of steel!

(No Bad Hair Day like
Hugo A-go-go
when you were my girl, girl!)
